We were very excited to welcome Niko, a journeyman carpenter and master timber framer from Germany to our facility for six weeks. Journeymen travel abroad for three years or sometimes longer to complete a formal apprenticeship program. They can be recognized by their cane made from a twisted branch (the Stenz), the black hat they must wear at all times as a sign of authority, and a three-piece black and white suit with – depending on the guild – an identifying tie.
We were fortunate to connect with the journeymen apprenticeship program through our lead designer on staff who received his Master’s degree in Timber Frame Technology from Germany. Niko brought his German hand cutting skills and carpentry experience with him to help complete the Ark and other various projects.
